Almost every breastfeeding mother, at some point, asks the same anxious question: is my milk enough? Tamil kitchens answered with food — a whole vocabulary of ingredients believed to support lactation, served with reassurance on the side.

The traditional supporters

Fenugreek (vendhayam) leads the list — in kanji, dosai batter and kuzhambu. Garlic features daily in postpartum cooking, and moringa leaves, sesame, cumin and oats all hold honoured places. These foods are nourishing in their own right, whatever their effect on supply.

What matters most

Lactation consultants agree the biggest levers are frequent effective feeding, plenty of fluids, adequate calories and rest. Supportive foods work best as part of a well-fed, well-rested mother — not as magic pills for an exhausted one.

When to seek help

If you're worried about baby's weight gain or supply, a lactation consultant or paediatrician can help properly — reaching out is strength, not failure.

Feed the mother well, and she feeds the baby.

May your plate be as generous as everything you're giving.
